Braided Hair is a popular style whose origins are from
West Africa. There are several types of braids one can
get. They range from simple, such as a single French
braid, to intricate, like basket-weave styles. Braids
can be created with extensions, using synthetic or human
hair, or with one's own hair. Other braiding styles
include micro braids, which are very small braids,
usually done with extensions, single braids that are
created by braiding the hair to the end; and cornrows,
which follow the shape of the head and lie flat against
the scalp.
Micro Braids- Are small individual braids. This
look can be achieved with your natural hair of with hair
added. Micro Braids is a great way to transition your
hair from relaxers to going natural. It allows your hair
to rest and recover, while keeping a neat professional
and stylish appearance. Human hair is recommended for
extensions. This style last for 30 days.
Tree-Braids – Invisible Braiding (also
called Tree Braiding). This popular cornrowed technique
allows extension hair to be put in without threads or
glues. Extension hair is braided in with the client’s
hair in cornrowed braid layers close to the scalp. As
the braid goes in place, the extension hair is separated
from the natural hair in small sections and pulled away
from the braid in a close pattern. The natural hair ends
up fully braided and serves as a support for the
extension hair. Invisible braids are a great choice for
anyone wanting to give their natural hair a break from
chemicals. Invisible braids go in fast but do not last
as long as more traditional braids. This particular type
of braid will need to be redone more frequently. For
this reason synthetic hair is recommended for this type
of braiding.
Cornrows- Are braids of hair that are plated flat
against the scalp. The braids are worked in geometric
patterns to form simple or complex designs. These can
range from straight front to back patterns to designs
that combine curves and other shapes. Cornrow styles can
be achieved with natural and extension hair. Length of
time style can be worn varies by style.
Kinky Twist- Are individual braids that begin as
a small undetectable braid and graduates into two strand
twist. This style can be achieved with one’s natural
hair or synthetic kinky hair can be added. This style
lasts up to 30 days.
Braid Styles Maintenance
Before getting your hair braided make sure your hair is
strong enough and in good shape. I highly recommend
seeing a licensed cosmetologist for a consultation
before installing any braid style. Extensions should be
discouraged if within 2 weeks of any chemical treatment.
Deep Condition hair before braiding.
Keep scalp moisturized with jojoba, emu, or shea
butters.
Moisturized with braid spray daily.
