Proper Care for
Straightened Black Hair
Straightening
black hair requires a
flat iron or
straightening iron - and often a little relaxer
to get the job done. To straighten, heat,
cooling and chemicals restructure molecular
alignment of proteins.
This
"re-alignment" often reduces natural oils and
increases dryness. Unlike when heat is
applied to metal it reforms and strengthens,
follicles lose the tight connection that gives
them the ability to naturally bend, flex and
rebound.
Heat and
chemicals, in fact, weaken bonds making black
hair weaker and susceptible to humidity, frizz
and a "damaged look". Using a leave-in
conditioner, a moisturizing shampoo for black
hair, and use of supplements can help keep hair
healthy as well as ward-off dandruff, flakes and
slow growth for both women and men.
Oil treatments,
such as Jojoba Oil heated in hot water, make an
excellent treatment as well for helping protect
from heat or styling damage when you straighten
or relax. Used equally effective either
before styling, Jojoba acts similarly to our
natural oils (sebum). |
